Human resource development graduate students will study the theory, principles, research, and practices of instructional systems design as it relates to human resource development and on-the-job training. Learning the basics of instructional design for adult learners will equip graduate students to develop and implement training programs within their organization. Instructional systems design is associated with the analysis of human performance problems in organizations, the identification of the root causes of those problems, and the creation of solutions to address the root causes. Instructional systems design typically includes the preparation of work-related instruction for adult learners including the formulation of intended learning outcomes, lesson plans, instructional strategies and technologies, and evaluation. It also points to non-instructional solutions such as the use of job-aids, design of jobs and tasks, job-related feedback, and reward systems.
